Course Overview
This training provides essential awareness for understanding the risks, responsibilities, and safe working practices associated with emergency management and response in the workplace. The course is designed to help participants understand how emergency planning and response activities form part of workplace health and safety management, and how effective preparedness and response behaviours can help prevent injuries, minimise harm, protect property, and reduce business disruption.
Participants will gain awareness of employer and employee responsibilities, emergency planning, roles and responsibilities during an emergency, evacuation procedures, communication protocols, and the importance of following company procedures when responding to an emergency situation.

What is Emergency Management? Understanding what is meant by emergency management and response, including planning for foreseeable emergencies, coordinated response actions, business continuity considerations, and the range of emergencies that may affect a workplace, such as fire, flooding, chemical release, structural incidents, medical emergencies, and severe weather events.
Legal and Safety Responsibilities Overview of relevant workplace safety responsibilities under the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005 and associated regulations, including the need for safe systems of work, emergency plans, competent personnel, and compliance with fire safety and emergency planning requirements.
Employer and Employee Duties Understanding the responsibilities of employers, managers, supervisors, and employees in managing emergency risks, including cooperation, reporting concerns, participating in drills, and following company emergency procedures and policies.
Emergency Planning and Preparedness Awareness of the importance of developing and maintaining emergency plans, identifying foreseeable emergency scenarios, assigning roles and responsibilities, assembly points, emergency contacts, and ensuring plans are reviewed, tested, and communicated effectively.
Roles and Responsibilities During an Emergency Understanding the role of fire wardens, first aiders, incident controllers, floor marshals, and other designated personnel, along with the general responsibilities of all employees during an emergency situation.
Evacuation and Emergency Response Procedures Awareness of safe evacuation procedures, assembly points, personal emergency evacuation plans (PEEPs) for those requiring assistance, use of emergency equipment, shelter-in-place considerations, and coordination with emergency services on arrival.
Hazard Awareness in the Workplace Recognising common emergency-related hazards, including fire and smoke, structural damage, hazardous substance releases, medical emergencies, severe weather, security incidents, and changing conditions during an evolving emergency.
Incident and Emergency Awareness Understanding the importance of reporting incidents, near misses, faulty emergency equipment, blocked escape routes, and unsafe conditions, and following company procedures during and after an emergency event, including post-incident review and reporting obligations.
Communication and Reporting Promoting effective communication between employees, supervisors, managers, incident controllers, and emergency services to ensure emergency risks are identified, reported, reviewed, and controlled.
